The homepage block Find what fits (block type Quiz (Compass theme), template Consultation with a compass dial) holds the questions as plain text. Edit it in Website → Themes → Layouts → Home page: open the block’s settings and change the text on the Content tab. Each language has its own text.

  • ? Question | hint starts a question. (Answer, Answer) right after the ? shows the question only after one of these answers of an earlier question (answers may contain commas, like “Skin, hair & nails”).
  • - Answer | mapping | hint adds an answer to the last question: two to eight answers per question.
  • Mapping: * (or nothing) filters nothing; category: Name (or the category ID) limits the matches to that category and its subcategories; Feature: Variant limits them to products with that feature value. Several variants separated by commas mean “any of them”; several features separated by ; must all match. Features are found by their name or their feature code, variants by their name, in the language of the block.
  • title, intro, result (heading of the result), button (last button) and category (start category for every match) are optional lines before the first question.
  • A name that does not exist in your catalogue makes that answer filter nothing; the block lists such names in an HTML comment in the page source so you can fix them.

Best fit and good fit. After every answer the right column shows the most popular products that match every answer so far (Best fit). If there are fewer than the column holds, it is filled with products that match all answers except the last one that filters (Good fit). Nothing is invented: both come from your feature values. The “See all matches” link opens the category page with the same product filters set (when every feature in the answers has an active product filter) or the search results.

Tips. Ask about the goal first and send each answer to a category; then ask about the need and the format with features. Keep “Not sure” answers (*). The quiz works without JavaScript too: every question is listed and “Show my matches” opens the filtered page. You can place more quiz blocks, for example a short one on a category page.

Your top-level categories are the goals; their subcategories are the needs. On a category page Compass shows the name in big type, the first paragraph of the description as a plain-language lead and the subcategories as Narrow it down chips with product counts. The main menu is the goal sentence in the header (“Help me …”): name the menu items as the end of that sentence (for example “sleep better”, “my pet”) in Website → Menus.

Give products two features with these feature codes (Products → Features → the feature → Feature code):

Feature code Example Use
CP_UNITS 90 units in the pack (a number)
CP_UNIT capsule, bag, 100 g the unit name

Compass then shows “$0.21 / capsule” on match cards, in comparisons, under the product price and on the product image. For weights, use 100 g as the unit and the number of 100 g portions as the units (500 g → 5). The setting Show prices per unit turns it off.

Put the features you want in the product page checklist into a feature group with the feature code CP_FIT. Every feature of that group that the product has becomes a row with a tick; the feature with the code CP_NOTFOR gets a cross (for example “Not for: Children under 12”). The same features fill the rows of the comparison tables. The first value of the feature with the code CP_NEED (“Good for”) is the small “For falling asleep” line on cards and product pages.

The homepage block Side by side, in plain words compares the products you pick (two to four work best). The Ask an adviser block is a normal HTML block: change its text and link (for example to your contact page or a help desk). The product page block Compared with two alternatives picks the two most popular other products of the product’s category.

Compass shows what your product data says: features, units and your texts. Write what a product is, how it is used and who it is not for; avoid medical claims your market does not allow.
