Route guide.

Three days, two huts and one pass at 2,700 m: this is the kit list we carried, every item weighed. The trick is not the lightest pack but the fewest items: one warm layer, one shell, one spare pair of socks.

We packed the Summit 38 at 7.8 kg including food for lunch and two litres of water.

We slept outside at -9 °C in four bags

Test.

Four sleeping bags, one clear night on a snow field at -9 °C and four testers who swapped bags at 2 am. Temperature ratings are measured in a lab; this is what they feel like in a tent.

Spoiler: the Ember -9 was the only bag nobody wanted to give back.

Re-proof a shell in 20 minutes

Care.

If rain soaks into the outer fabric of your shell, it is not leaking: the water-repellent finish is worn. Wash it, tumble dry it warm and the finish comes back. If it does not, re-proof it with a spray-on treatment.

Gravel tyre pressure, simply

Bike.

Lower than you think: for 45 mm tyres and a 75 kg rider, start at 2.4 bar on mixed gravel and go down until the bike feels lively, not vague.

Night running: lamps compared

Test.

We ran the same 12 km forest loop with five headlamps. Brightness matters less than beam shape: a wide flood for roots, a long spot for open fire roads.

How we fit a pack

Guide.

A well-fitted pack carries on your hips, not your shoulders. In store we measure your back length, load the pack with 10 kg and adjust it in five steps; here they are.
